Prevent and Detect Oral Health Issues

Here at American Dental of LaGrange, we offer gentle and highly professional dental cleanings that are designed to prevent and detect complicated oral health issues, such as the development of tooth decay and gum disease.

According to the Academy of General Dentistry, oral cleaning should be performed at least once every six months. This comprehensive cleaning service compliments the home-based oral health regimen of brushing, flossing, and utilizing a specially-designed mouth rinse.

Our professional cleaning service is designed to enhance the comfort of all patients and provides a dental practitioner the opportunity to provide diagnostic and preventive oral health services. By receiving regular professional dental cleanings, you will be taking the step necessary to prevent pain, the development of serious oral health complications, and money.

The Dental Cleaning Process

The following outlines the steps that are taken during the dental cleaning process offered by our team of practitioners here at American Dental of LaGrange:

  • We will review your medical history and determine if there are risk factors and/or current health problems that are known to detrimentally impact your oral health.
  • A thorough evaluation of the soft tissue in the mouth will be conducted to determine if gum disease has developed, or is likely to develop.
  • The teeth will be visually inspected and may even be inspected via a digital x-ray to determine the onset of tooth decay.
  • Tartar and plaque that is located both above and below the gum line will be gently removed.
  • Once debris is eliminated from the teeth, the teeth undergo a professional dental polishing and fluoride is directly applied to each tooth.
  • While engaging in the gentle, professional cleaning, the practitioner will carefully evaluate each tooth to identify the presence and/or the development of cavities.
  • If it becomes evident that gum disease is present within the mouth, we will administer a local anesthetic and conduct a deep cleaning to ensure that all bacteria and foreign matter deep below the gum line is completed omitted.
  • An examination for oral cancer will be performed.
  • If stains are found, the practitioner will work to eliminate these unsightly blemishes.
  • If you have dentures, filling, crowns, or similar types of dental work, these will be cleaned and may be adjusted, according to individual need.

The Importance of Professional Dental Cleanings

Professional dental cleanings are highly important to one’s oral health. The following outlines the advantages associated with this professional oral health service:

  • Professional cleanings allow a practitioner to evaluate for and identify problems – such as chipped teeth, decaying teeth, gum disease, and the development of cavities – before they become extremely problematic to the patient.
  • These cleanings aid a practitioner in identifying the abnormalities that are commonly present with oral cancer. If cancer is suspected, tests are done to confirm the issue. If a patient tests positive, treatment is initiated immediately to protect the patient.
  • Professional dental cleanings eliminate bacteria and other types of matter from the mouth that causes bad breath and detrimentally impacts the overall appearance of the teeth.
  • Instructions are provided to patients regarding proper brushing and flossing techniques.
  • Recommendations for the future oral health treatments required will be provided. Examples of these services may include follow-up cleaning appointments, periodontal treatment, and/or restorative dentistry requirements.
  • If needed, nutritional counseling and counseling for tobacco-usage cessation may be provided.
  • The biting, the chewing, and even the swallowing patterns may be evaluated.
  • If needed, referral services to a dental specialist for a certain type of treatment may be provided.
